Frequently Asked Questions
Am I required to have a meal plan?
Students living in Bailey, Pioneer, Comstock, Frontier, Middlebrook, Sanford, Territorial, Centennial, or 17th Ave Halls are required to select a Weekly or Anytime meal plan on their application for housing. If you don’t indicate your meal plan preference, you will automatically be assigned to the 14 meals per week + $100 FlexDine plan.
Students living in an apartment or off-campus can choose to sign up for a weekly or block meal plan.
FlexDine is available for any student - with or without a meal plan - and can be used at any M Dining location.
What is FlexDine?
FlexDine is available to all students, faculty, or staff - with or without a meal plan!
FlexDine can be used at on-campus Restaurants, Food Courts, Markets, and Coffee Shops. You can also use FlexDine at the Student Section of TCF Bank Stadium during Gopher Football games or to order pizza delivery from Davanni's for your on-campus apartment or residence hall.
When you add at least $300 in FlexDine, M Dining will give you a bonus of $15 for FREE!
These dining dollars are loaded directly onto your U Card and can be re-loaded at any time in $25 increments by ordering online at CampusDish.
Where can I find the dining hall menu?
Online menus enable you to pre-select your meal, get location hours, and view nutritional information prior to dining. Menus and nutrition information can be viewed up to 1 week in advance at dining.umn.edu/menus.
I want to work on campus! Are you hiring?
M Dining is the largest on-campus student employer with more than 600 positions available each year. We know that being a student comes first, so we offer flexible schedules and students can work as few as 3 shifts per week.

Will unused meals or FlexDine carry over?
Unused meals will not roll over to the next semester. Weekly meal plans reset each Monday morning and Block Plans expire at the end of the academic term.
FlexDine balances remaining on your U Card at the end of each semester will remain available for your use until they are used or until one year of inactivity occurs on the account. After one year of inactivity, any funds remaining will revert back to the University of Minnesota.

Can I upgrade or change my meal plan?
Students living in a Residence Hall may request a change to their Fall Semester meal plan during the first two weeks of class at the following website: housing.umn.edu/mealplanchange (Note: This website will not be active until the beginning of the fall semester). Spring meal plan changes will take place during November and students will receive an email from Housing and Residential Life and M Dining with instructions.
Students living in an apartment or off-campus can request a change to their meal plan within 10 business days after purchasing (or the first day of class if purchased before classes begin). To request a change, email email@example.com.
My class schedule makes it hard to get to the dining hall. Can I take my meal to go?
Busy day? Never miss a meal again! With the M Dining To-Go program, you can stop in with a meal swipe and take five minutes to fill up on your favorite foods while you’re on the way to a study session or class. First-year students on a meal plan will be provided a complimentary to-go container when you move in. Learn more at dining.umn.edu/to-go
Can I use my meal plan on friends and family?
All M Dining Anytime and Weekly plans come with 10 guest swipes each semester that students can use on themselves (if they run out of swipes) or a guest.
